Readers of this blog will have noticed that, besides being a great admirer of Michelangelo, I am also a genuine fanboy of Pontormo. You will understand my excitement on learning that the Pontormo exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale opens in Rome on 9 October, the first great monographic show ever dedicated to him. I am as excited as a world leader in 2026 preparing to declare war on a neighbouring state. If you too are counting down to Pontormo Rome 2026, here is a little game to while away the time until the exhibition opens. Since more than anyone else, Pontormo was the painter of wild and inventive colour, the game is simple: guess the work of art from its colour palette.
The exhibition: practical information
- Where: Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome
- When: from 9 October 2026 to 7 February 2027
- Curator: Cristina Acidini, in partnership with the Gallerie degli Uffizi
- The headline work: the Visitation from Carmignano, alongside loans from the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, the National Gallery, the British Museum and the Getty Museum

How the game works: for each painting you will only see the colours extracted from it. Click the title you think is correct: only then will the painting be revealed, so you can check for yourself. The fewer colour samples you see, the more points they are worth, so the paintings with a single colour are the hardest.
